Most are unaware of the many realities outside of our own existence and we have to be thankful that we are now in an age of multicultural acceptance and the Chinese zodiac is very important to the astrological collective. The Chinese zodiac known in China as Sheng Xiao, uses animals (instead of constellations) for each year to represent 12 years of a 60 year cycle. This zodiac chart is very complex, has been used for over 2000 years and is popular in various South East Asia cultures. It is vaguely used in western astrology but is most popular around the Chinese new year. This zodiac chart isn’t represented by stars and constellations like the western zodiac. For an in depth explanation chinesenewyear.net is a great reference on history.
The Chinese Zodiac has 12 animals with a Chinese name, meaning, element and is divided by the years you were born. Chinese zodiac myth says that the jade Emperor named the order in which the animals arrived at his party. The 12 animals of the zodiac are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep (goat), monkey, rooster, dog and pig. The five elements fire, earth, metal, water and wood are described as fundamental components of the universe needed for survival and each year has one of the 5 elements attached to it. These elements play an important part and make the chart more confusing to westerners as each element affects each year in a different way. It’s very important to not guess as this chart isn’t as broad as the western astrological chart but once you understand it can help you learn more about yourself, find balance and manage life choices better according to thousands of years of traditions.
